For optimum performance, timing should be set between 13 and 15 degrees. After advancing the timing, your engine will rev more quickly because the spark will fire sooner during the compression stroke. This change gives you more midrange power and better all-around driveability. Almost all the Mustangs I've driven have responded well to 14 degrees, but this doesn't mean it will work best in your car.

To set base timing, you'll need a timing light and a 1/2-inch wrench. If you need to buy a timing light, buy an inexpensive one. Begin by marking the timing indicator on the crankshaft balancer. Use typing correction fluid or white model paint to mark the 14-degree spot with a thin line. Then remove the spout connector found hanging from the single wire attached to the distributor-wire harness (top). Next, start the engine and check base timing. Now shut the engine off and loosen the 1/2-inch bolt at the base of the distributor. Once the distributor is loose, fire the engine and set the timing to 14 degrees by turning the distributor slowly. While the engine is running, be careful not to get loose clothing or jewelry caught in the fan, for it will surely ruin your weekend. After the timing is set, tighten the distributor and check to make sure it hasn't moved. Finally, put back the spout connector and test. If the connector is left out, the computer won't allow maximum timing and fuel curve, and the performance will show it. If your car pings under hard acceleration, consider a 92-plus-octane super unleaded gasoline. If it still pings, double-check the timing. If you set it at 14 degrees, back off until detonation is no longer present.

Its true...

My buddy Fedon has an 87 Stang 5.0...

It had an 86 short block with stock E7 heads and i installed the Performer RPM+ upper and lower intake manifold on there with a BBK 70MM T.B. and spacer, Adjustable FPR, etc..

Went to the dyno the day after, got the A/F ratio at an almost perfect 13, set timing to 15 degrees advance and made 247RWHP and 301RW.TQ.

Thats MY work and MY tuning on a 5.0.

1 month later the motor blew up. The crankshaft snapped in half, threw 3 rods out the oil pan, ripped the balancer right off the crank snout, thru the fan belt around everything and the timing chain and casing broke right off the block and yanked the cam out...

Tough Times...

I know Fedon, I think I installed a clutch and trans in his car. I remember he was looking for a motor a while back. Tell him I STILL have the face plate from his stereo.

As for timing, its best to play with it. I've set some cars at 16* for optimum power with no detonation through even the hottest days. Most cars like about 13-14* BTDC though. Best place to start right after removing the silencer. I always get a nostalgic feeling when I remove a silencer, finding a "stock" Stang with one in place is very hard to do.
