That's what I wrote about a year ago, when I heard about a team of Iraqi soldiers who were driving around, shooting randomly at roadside bombs.
You see, everyone in Iraq -- from American engineers to local troops -- seems to think that defusing an improvised explosive device is as easy as pulling the red wire.
Well, wrong. It takes more than a year to teach military bomb techs the tools of the trade, because explosives are dangerous as hell -- and unpredictable in all sorts of ways, to the unschooled eye. Sure, a newbie can get lucky. He can even get repeatedly lucky. But, sooner or later, you have to be smart, too. Or else you wind up like these poor bastards.
